  • New in Summer of 2011: Louisiana College to Provide Professional Development Opportunities

Opportunity Education has partnered with Louisiana College's Teacher Education Department to provide teachers in the developing world with two opportunities to receive professional development in the summer of 2011. Teachers at schools that receive educational materials from Opportunity Education will participate in TEACH Summer Institute at Louisiana College and also Professional Development Seminars in Tanzania. Such educational opportunities for teachers in the developing world will help to support the Foundation's mission to make quality education available to children in developing nations. For the first professional development program, five educators from Africa were selected to spend the summer at Louisiana College's Teacher Education Department participating in the TEACH Summer Institute. The TEACH Summer Institute focuses on current teaching methods and educational theory. While participating in program, educators will participate in several different professional modules, including Components of Effective Teaching and Lesson Plan by Design. The teachers that take courses through this program will share best practices in education and the current methods they learned at Louisiana College with other educators in their home country. The second professional development opportunity will take place in Tanzania starting the last week in July. Educators from Louisiana College will travel to Tanzania to provide a week long professional development seminar to teachers in both Moshi and Mwanza. Through these seminars, educators in Tanzania will have an opportunity to participate in different sessions designed to fit the age level of the students they teach in their own classrooms. Opportunity Education is pleased to offer these professional development seminars in Tanzania in conjunction with Louisiana College's Teacher Education Department to promote quality instruction, assessment and certification to teachers that work in the target schools in our program.
