Martin Russell / Tanzania Country Director
Based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Martin Russell serves as the Tanzania country director for the Opportunity Education Foundation. He has a deep commitment to the meaningful work of making quality education accessible to children in developing countries. He is motivated by the belief that such an opportunity for education holds the real promise of offering a higher living standard and providing the real chance for a brighter future.
Since 1999 he has provided primary senior leadership to global partnerships in Africa and South America. These partnerships serve as the foundation for education, healthcare, and outreach projects between United States-based partners and international church bodies and organizations. He has a proven track record in management and organizational development that embraces networking, capacity building, and project development and management, especially in countries within Africa and South America.
Martin is a graduate of Midland University (formerly Midland Lutheran College) in Fremont, Nebraska, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Opportunity Education Foundation, he served for 24 years as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. For 11 of those years he was the Assistant to the Bishop of the Nebraska Synod (ELCA) where he provided leadership to the Synod's global mission efforts.
